【簡介】 American presidential election campaigns are supposed to inform the public about present dangers and opportunities, enabling voters to choose the candidate most likely to defend the quality of national existence. The Democratic and Republican parties instead prioritize mobilizing electoral support with appeals to identity, ideology, idealism and fear. Instead of providing voters with an appreciation of how their partisan programs are likely to affect them, both parties demonize each other and barrage the public with deceptive idealist appeals. Clearly, controlling the narrative is more important to the candidates than candidly addressing present dangers and opportunities. This results in narratives that are full of sound and fury, yet signify little. Avoiding the media melodrama and adopting a non-partisan position, Harris versus Trump: America's Existential Futures identifies the power-seeking goals of the Democratic and Republican parties, and their path-dependent systemic consequences. The flagbearers of the two parties, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, offer voters two distinct "existential" futures that only come into focus with detailed examinations of the real present dangers and opportunities. Hence, this book surveys key domestic and foreign challenges confronting the United States, obscured by campaign rhetoric, and discusses the candidates' implicit and explicit attitudes toward them. Harris versus Trump considers America's prospects under Harris and Trump regimes, revealing that the outcome of the November 2024 election is likely to matter more fundamentally than most observers appreciate. 【目錄】

This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of key areas of subcellular aging research in human cells. The reader is introduced to the historical development and progress in biomedical aging research and learns, for example, about the role of microRNAs, circRNAs, mitochondria and extracellular vesicles in cellular senescence. The reader will also learn more about how gap junctions, the nuclear pore complex and the proteasome are affecting the ageing processes. In addition, novel therapeutic opportunities through modulation of cellular senescence are discussed. The book follows on from Parts I and II of Biochemistry and Cell Biology of Ageing (Volumes 90 and 91 of the Subcellular Biochemistry book series) by covering interesting and significant biomedical ageing topics not included in the earlier volumes. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, this book is a valuable resource for experienced researchers and early career scientist alike, who are interested in learning more about the fascinating and challenging question of why and how our cells age.

This fascinating book offers a pathway for the NHS to adopt low-cost but effective innovations from areas of the world traditionally seen as beneficiaries rather than providers of help and support. In an era of increasing demand and dwindling resources, and where the COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated the structural limitations of the current system, the book provides examples of simple, frugal but high-quality alternatives to current practice. From orthopaedics to paediatrics, and mental health to plastic surgery, the book illustrates how low- and middle-income countries have found solutions to healthcare issues that are not only safe and clinically effective but also have the potential to save the NHS millions of pounds. Grounded in the contemporary debates of decolonization, it invites readers to question the culture and systems in global health that view low-income countries as solely passive recipients of aid. The volume will be essential reading for students and scholars across Public Health, Global Health, and Development Studies, as well as healthcare managers and policy makers in the UK and beyond.
