Veterinary care for birds is frequently handled by a specialist in avian medicine; board certification is available in the US through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (which offers an Avian/Exotic Companion Mammal certification) and through the American College of Zoological Medicine, and in Europe through the European College of Avian Medicine and Surgery. Birds are sometimes also taken to general practice vets, particularly in emergency situations, although general practitioners may not be as familiar with treating birds＂--
