【簡介】 In this new edition of the standard undergraduate textbook on electricity and magnetism, David Griffiths provides expanded discussions on topics such as the nature of field lines, the crystal ambiguity, eddy currents, and the Thomson kink model. Ideal for junior and senior undergraduate students from physics and electrical engineering, the book now includes many new examples and problems, including numerical applications (in Mathematica) to reflect the increasing importance of computational techniques in contemporary physics. Many figures have been redrawn, while updated references to recent research articles not only emphasize that new discoveries are constantly made in this field, but also help to expand readers' understanding of the topic and of its importance in current physics research. New edition of the leading undergraduate textbook on electromagnetism for students in physics and electrical engineering Retains the widely lauded clarity of previous editions, demystifying difficult and subtle mathematical and physical concepts without sacrificing rigor Author is renowned within the physics community for this textbook and Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Cambridge University Press, 3rd edition 2018) Includes a selection of new problems (and several applied computational problems in Mathematica), worked examples, and updated references to recent research Many figures have been revised or redrawn to provide enhanced pedagogical clarity 【目錄】 1. Vector analysis 2. Electrostatics 3. Potentials 4. Electric fields in matter 5. Magnetostatics 6. Magnetic fields in matter 7. Electrodynamics 8. Conservation laws 9. Electromagnetic waves 10. 【原文書】 書名:Principles of Quantum Mechanics 2/e 作者:R. Shankar 出版社:Kluwer Academic Plenum Publishers ISBN:9780306447907 About this Textbook Reviews from the First Edition: "An excellent text … The postulates of quantum mechanics and the mathematical underpinnings are discussed in a clear, succinct manner." (American Scientist) "No matter how gently one introduces students to the concept of Dirac’s bras and kets, many are turned off. Shankar attacks the problem head-on in the first chapter, and in a very informal style suggests that there is nothing to be frightened of." (Physics Bulletin) Reviews of the Second Edition: "This massive text of 700 and odd pages has indeed an excellent get-up, is very verbal and expressive, and has extensively worked out calculational details---all just right for a first course. The style is conversational, more like a corridor talk or lecture notes, though arranged as a text. … It would be particularly useful to beginning students and those in allied areas like quantum chemistry." (Mathematical Reviews) R. Shankar has introduced major additions and updated key presentations in this second edition of Principles of Quantum Mechanics. New features of this innovative text include an entirely rewritten mathematical introduction, a discussion of Time-reversal invariance, and extensive coverage of a variety of path integrals and their applications. Additional highlights include: - Clear, accessible treatment of underlying mathematics - A review of Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian mechanics - Student understanding of quantum theory is enhanced by separate treatment of mathematical theorems and physical postulates - Unsurpassed coverage of path integrals and their relevance in contemporary physics The requisite text for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students, Principles of Quantum Mechanics, Second Edition is fully referenced and is supported by many exercises and solutions. The book’s self-contained chapters also make it suitable for independent study as well as for courses in applied disciplines.

We are pleased by the positive resonance of our book which now necessitates a fourth edition. We have used this opportunity to implement corrections of misprints and amendments at several places, and to extend and improve the discussion of many of the exercises and examples. We hope that our presentation of the method of equivalent photons (Example 3. 17), the form factor of the electron (Example 5. 7), the infrared catastrophe (Example 5. 8) and the energy shift of atomic levels (Example 5. 9)arenow even better to understand. The new Exercise 5. 10 shows in detail how to arrive at the non-relativistic limit for the calculation of form factors. Moreover, we have brought up-to-date the Biographical Notes about physicists who have contributed to the dev- opment of quantum electrodynamics, and references to experimental tests of the t- ory. For example, there has been recent progress in the determination of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton (discussed in Exercise 3. 5 on the Rosenbluth formula) and the Lamb shift of high-Z atoms (discussed in Example 5. 9 on the energy shift of atomic levels), while the experimental veri cation of the birefringence of the QED vacuum in a strong magnetic eld (Example 7. 8) remains unsettled and is a topic of active ongoing research.

【簡介】 These two volumes cover the classical topics typically taught in undergraduate physics courses and beyond. However, we teach classical physics using a very different language from traditional books, influenced by the language of modern physics, in a move to encourage a positive approach towards the latter subject. Based around the unifying concept of energy, we take a distinct approach to the organisation of material, presenting physics in a cohesive manner without separating topics such as mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism. Instead, physics is revealed gradually, emphasising a holistic approach to science. Despite this peculiarity, we have maintained the conventional separation between Physics I and II to assist teachers in smoothly integrating these books into their courses. These innovative volumes present valuable new perspectives. Although their approach is bold, they will certainly prompt interesting reflections on traditional teachings. A significant portion of this second volume is committed to modern physics, including an introduction to the standard model of fundamental interactions. The old quantum mechanics is largely excluded in favour of quantum field theory, which we present in a manner accessible to undergraduate students.

【簡介】 This book provides a comprehensive exploration in the fundamental physics of the non-relativistic atom in terms of its symmetries. The book gives a complete treatment of the dynamical symmetries of the H atom and the use of these symmetries to determine energy levels and analytically calculate the first order radiative Lamb shift using group theory. Understanding radiative shifts is critical since measurement of the Lamb shift led to the development of quantum electrodynamics. The harmony between the mathematics and the physics is emphasised throughout the book. Through the lens of symmetry, it is possible to elucidate key features of the H atom is a way that is elegant, simple, and focuses on fundamentals.Understanding the hydrogen atom has been the gateway to the development of quantum physics for over 100 years. Both quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics were discovered by exploring the spectra of the H atom. This book outlines the key mathematical and physical behavior of the H atom, and its historical context, that led to these discoveries. The quantum behavior is related to the corresponding classical behavior and to the harmonic oscillator, the other fundamental central force system. Understanding the H atom, the most basic physical system, is a gateway to understanding much of quantum theory.
