20世紀初期，生物學家 Karl Pearson推展了生物統計學的新頁，成立第一個生物統計的期刊 Biometrika，奠定了生物統計學理的重要基礎。之後，重要的生物統計學的學者包括有 Fisher, Wright, Haldane等人；特別是 Fisher他發展出來的一些統計推論原理早已是經現代統計學的重要基礎。
對很多人而言，生物統計學和統計學一樣，不但是一種科學，它的分析表現也是一種藝術的呈現。因此，生物統計學家基本上就是資料科學家（ data scientist），但是他們也熱衷於將分析的創見當成一種藝術品。現代生物統計的應用，除了在醫藥和農業研究外，它所發展出來的分析方法也很普遍的被應用在心理、教育、管理、財金、工程等等相關的研究上。因此，本書中所討論的案例以醫藥問題的研究為主，但是方法不限制僅能應用於生物資料的分析。
本書特色
1.分析方法的介紹盡量由解決實際問題的需求出發，強調學統計是為應用的目的。
2.盡量用平易的文字敘述分析的方法及要解決的問題，若非必要，不呈現公式的推導，避開學統計和學數學沒兩樣的誤會。
3.介紹如何使用雲端資料分析及導引系統（ R-web），將複雜的生物統計計算降低到最簡單的層次，強調在雲端軟體的時代，生物統計的分析可以在方法上多講究，不必要花費太多時間和心力在處理計算的問題。
4.用淺顯易懂的字介紹一些過去教科書沒教但現代醫藥研究上常用的分析方法，例如，存活分析 5.內容的設計適合給每周上課二小時，共上課 15周的初級生物統計課程，本書可供為教科書或工具書使用。
