Notes on Thermodynamics: Hot Oolong Cools (1版)

【簡介】 This title is a supplement to lectures and tutorials in a Thermodynamics course and also serves as a guide to more comprehensive texts. Rather than merely hurrying through the principles and then dealing with applications, the book presents the scientific method by discussing the science of thermodynamics starting from empirical observations that are relatable to students. For example, the book uses everyday experiences, such as a cup of hot tea cooling spontaneously, to arrive at the Second Law and Entropy through the idea of the heat engine. All the fundamentals are covered and illustrated with examples that resonate with the broad concerns and interests of students who take STEM classes today. The book examines the thermodynamics of hydrogen and gasoline engines, fuel cells versus the explosive combustion of hydrogen, how efficiently organisms and Spiderman utilize energy, the fizzing of a can of soda and decompression sickness, and how atmospheric carbon dioxide affects ocean pH and, worryingly, dissolves the calcium carbonate shells of marine animals, and also, what might happen if you inadvertently fall into a salt lake. Thermodynamics is presented as the macroscopic approach to understanding Nature when heat is involved. The book draws upon the idea of microstates where that clarifies the macroscopic ideas: entropy of mixing of gases is linked to Boltzmann and Gibbs' entropy formulations, thus motivating the formulation of the chemical potential of non-ideal systems in terms of their activities. Thermodynamics contains deep insight into the passage of Time. In the discussions of the Second Law the book highlights this, emphasizing that all the processes we observe in our universe are irreversible. Adopting an informal and readable style without compromising the rigour in this book, the goal is to help a broad audience of students appreciate the essential meaning of the Laws of Thermodynamics and to apply the fundamental framework at an elementary level. 【目錄】

LECTURE NOTES ON GENERAL TOPOLOGY

LECTURE NOTES ON GENERAL TOPOLOGY

This book is intended as a one-semester course in general topology, a.k.a. point-set topology, for undergraduate students as well as first-year graduate students. Such a course is considered a prerequisite for further studying analysis, geometry, manifolds, and certainly, for a career of mathematical research. Researchers may find it helpful especially from the comprehensive indices. General topology resembles a language in modern mathematics. Because of this, the book is with a concentration on basic concepts in general topology, and the presentation is of a brief style, both concise and precise. Though it is hard to determine exactly which concepts therein are basic and which are not, the author makes efforts in the selection according to personal experience on the occurrence frequency of notions in advanced mathematics, and to related books that have received admirable reviews. This book also contains exercises for each chapter with selected solutions. Interrelationships among concepts are taken into account frequently. Twelve particular topological spaces are repeatedly exploited, which serve as examples to learn new concepts based on old ones.

LECTURE NOTES ON MECHANICS: INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

This book is for students who are familiar with an introductory course in mechanics at the freshman level. With an emphasis on perspectives that are more fundamental and techniques more advanced than those given in most introductory mechanics textbooks, the book illuminates on notions where vectors are coordinate free, presents the importance of reference frames (inertial and non-inertial) to mechanics problems, the role of Galilean Relativity on invariance and covariance of physical quantities, a framework to perform calculations — free from the constraint of a fixed axis — in rotational dynamics, and others. Moreover, it provides clear links between concepts in mechanics and other branches of physics, such as thermodynamics and electrodynamics, so that students can possess a more complete view of what they learn within the confines of physics.

LECTURE NOTES ON ENGINEERING HUMAN THERMAL COMFORT

LECTURE NOTES ON ENGINEERING HUMAN THERMAL COMFORT

類似書籍推薦給您

Human thermal comfort, namely in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (collectively known as 'HVAC'), is ubiquitous wherever human habitation may be found. Today, a large portion of the developed world's current energy demands are used to artificially keep the temperatures of our environments comfortable. It is therefore imperative for everyone, decision-makers and engineers alike, involved with the future of energy to be appropriately acquainted with HVAC. Lecture Notes on Engineering Human Thermal Comfort explains the quintessence of engineering human thermal comfort through straight-forward writing designed to help students better comprehend the materials presented. Illustrative figures, anecdotal banter, and ironical analogies interject the necessary technical humdrum to provide timeous stimuli in the midst of arduous technical details. This book is primarily for senior undergraduate engineering students interested in engineering human thermal comfort. It invokes some undergraduate knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics as needed, to enable students to appreciate thermal comfort engineering without the need to seek out other textbooks. Sample Chapter(s) Preface 1: What is Thermal Comfort? Errata(s) Errata (1 MB) Contents: What is Thermal Comfort? HVAC Thermodynamics Psychrometry Psychrometric Chart and Air-Conditioning Processes Building Heat Transmission Heating in the Winter Solar Radiation Cooling in the Summer Energy Estimation Heating and Cooling Systems Nature Thermal Comfort Readership: Senior undergraduate engineering students interested in engineering human thermal comfort and HVAC. Decision-makers and engineers involved in the future of energy will also benefit from a better acquaintance with HVAC through this book.
