【簡介】 This book aims to popularize physics by emphasizing conceptual ideas of physics and their interconnections, while avoiding mathematics entirely. The approach is to explore intriguing topics of daily relevance by asking and discussing questions: thereby the reader can participate in developing answers, which enables a deeper understanding than is achievable with memorization. The topic of this book — waves — is chosen because we experience waves in many forms every minute of our lives, from sound waves and light waves to quantum waves and brain waves. The target readership of this book is very broad: all those with a curious mind about nature and with a desire to understand how nature works, especially laymen, youngsters, secondary-school children and their teachers. Free videos on YouTube illustrate and animate central aspects of this book at YouTube. 【目錄】 Preface Waves — Part A: From Musical Instruments and Sounds to Human and Animal Voices: Waves: What and Why Waves on Strings Waves in Air: Sound, Acoustics Waves on Sticks, Plates, Drums and Flags From Waves to Music From Waves to Human and Animal Voices Summary of Part A Waves — Part B: From Earthquakes and Tsunamis to Light and the Quantum World: Preview of Part B Sound Waves Inside Water and Rocks: Earthquakes Reflection, Transmission and Refraction of Waves in 1D, 2D and 3D Surface Waves on Liquids: Waves on Water Light and Electromagnetic Radiation Quantum Mechanical Waves: From Atoms to DNA and Electronics Gravitational Waves Other Waves and Afterthoughts References and Resources Index About the Author

NONLINEAR WAVES AND INVERSE SCATTERING TRANSFORM

NONLINEAR WAVES AND INVERSE SCATTERING TRANSFORM

類似書籍推薦給您

"Nonlinear waves are essential phenomena in scientific and engineering disciplines. The features of nonlinear waves are usually described by solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (NLPDEs). This book was prepared to familiarize students with nonlinear waves and methods of solving NLPDEs, which will enable them to expand their studies into related areas. The selection of topics and the focus given to each provide essential materials for a lecturer teaching a nonlinear wave course. Chapter 1 introduces ""mode"" types in nonlinear systems as well as Bäcklund transform, an indispensable technique to solve generic NLPDEs for stationary solutions. Chapters 2 and 3 are devoted to the derivation and solution characterization of three generic nonlinear equations: nonlinear Schrödinger equation, Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation, and Burgers equation. Chapter 4 is devoted to the inverse scattering transform (IST), addressing the initial value problems of a group of NLPDEs. In Chapter 5, derivations and proofs of the IST formulas are presented. Steps for applying IST to solve NLPDEs for solitary solutions are illustrated in Chapter 6. Sample Chapter(s) Preface Contents: Nonlinear Waves Formulation of Nonlinear Wave Equations in Plasma Characteristics of Nonlinear Waves Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) Basis of Inverse Scattering Transform Solitary Waves Readership: Graduate and senior graduate courses on nonlinear waves, also relevant as a reference book for researchers, research labs and academic institutes."

This unique compendium introduces the field of numerical modelling of water waves. The topics included the most widely used water wave modelling approaches, presented in increasing order of complexity and categorized into phase-averaged and phase-resolving at the highest level. A comprehensive state-of-the-art review is provided for each chapter, comprising the historical development of the method, the most relevant models and their practical applications. A full description on the method's underlying assumptions and limitations are also provided. The final chapter features coupling among different models, outlining the different types of implementations, highlighting their pros and cons, and providing numerous relevant examples for full context. The useful reference text benefits professionals, researchers, academics, graduate and undergraduate students in wave mechanics in general and coastal and ocean engineering in particular. Sample Chapter(s) Foreword Chapter 1: Introduction Contents: Introduction Phase-Averaging Approaches: Spectral Wave Models Phase-Resolving Approaches: Depth-Averaged Models Potential Flow Models Navier–Stokes Models Lattice–Boltzmann Models Wave Modeling Couplings: Couplings Between Wave Models Executive Summary Readership: Researchers, professionals, academics, undergraduate and graduate students in ocean/coastal engineering and fluid mechanics.
